POSITION SUMMARY
The Section Head oversees the day-to-day operations of their department (Chemistry, Hematology-Coagulation-Urinalysis, Microbiology, Special Chemistry, Special Microbiology and Blood Bank-ABG). Performs routine maintenance of equipment used in their departments, updating procedures, calibrating test methods and ensuring quality results by monitoring quality control results. Trains new employees based on guidelines set by the Laboratory Director. The Section Head also ensures the department is maintained in an orderly fashion (e.g., order equipment and stock necessary for efficient workflow).
The Section Head performs accurate examination and analysis in their department. This involves constant monitoring of quality control procedures, proper equipment maintenance, controlling specimen collection techniques and proper training of Clinical Laboratory Scientists working in their department. It is the Section Head's responsibility to recognize problems in their department and to document corrective action.
The Section Head functions as supervisor on weekends and holidays and takes on responsibilities of the Laboratory Director as they relate to weekend workflow. The supervisor will make staffing decisions when the Director is unavailable and direct workflow by assigning duties when necessary. The supervisor will also field interdepartmental questions when they need to be resolved prior to the next regular workday.
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs various chemical, microscopic, microbiological and hematological tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Records laboratory test data, patient and quality control. Actively involved in quality control procedures, review and corrective action. Responsible for care of expensive laboratory equipment and instruments and judicious use of materials. Carefully handles infectious material(s) to protect all laboratory personnel. Utilizes knowledge of human physiology and science to evaluate test results for accuracy.
