Scheduled times include a 30-minute duty free lunch.

BEHAVIOR SUPPORT PARAEDUCATOR

DEFINITION

Under the direction of the site principal, the general education teacher and/or special education teacher, the Behavior Support Paraeducator will provide behavioral assistance to selected students in a one-to-one and/or small group setting.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The primary responsibility of this position will be to assist special needs students who require individual attention within a normal classroom setting. Incumbents typically assist students concentrating on emotional, behavioral and academic development as outlined in the students' Individualized Education Plan (1EP) or in the students' Behavioral Plan.

DUTIES
• Assists in implementing Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and/or behavior plan goals.
• Conducts individual and/or small group instructional activities as directed by classroom teacher.
• Implements behavioral management strategies for students, using the same emphasis and techniques as the teacher.
• Under the direction of the school nurse, administers medication if needed.
• Composes correspondence, completes incident reports, and maintains an efficient filing system of records.
• Provides an example to students in communication, self-control, and cooperation for the purpose of ensuring a positive learning environment
• Escorts students from classroom to classroom and other programs.
• Completes daily or weekly logs of students' behavior.
• Participates in various meetings for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information.
• Helps students to learn social skills.
• Assists in the monitoring and development of intervention plans and program policy; follows these guidelines for crisis intervention and physical restraint.
• Transports students and provide school bus assistance, if needed.
• Accompanies student on school field trips, if needed.
• Provides information to children and/or their parents about the Medi-Cal system and where and how to access applications.
• Copies and distribute Medi-Cal information to children and their families.
• Informs children and/or their parents about medical services available through school or in the local community.
• Refers children to medical services covered by Medi-¬Cal.
• Assists families and students with paperwork necessary to complete Medi-Cal and/or Healthy Families applications.
• Assists with the preparation of data required for MAA claiming.
• Attends MAA Time Survey training and ongoing MAA program policy/procedures meetings.
• Other duties as assigned by site principal, classroom teacher or school psychologist.

QUALIFICATIIONS
• Ability to function within legal and ethical constraints of position: trustworthy and confidential.
• Ability and knowledge to work with special needs students in a sensitive, patient and nurturing manner.
• Ability to take direction from student's teacher(s) and/or site administrator.
• Ability to establish and maintain rapport with children and adults.
• Present a professional and healthy appearance.
• Sufficient vision to see small print.
• Sufficient hearing to hear normal telephone conversations.
• Possession of valid California Drivers License.
• Willingness to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Must provide own transportation if required to work at more than one school site.
• Possesses ability to read, understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Ability to work one-on-one with students.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
• Meets no Child Left Behind (NCLB) Highly Qualified Criteria.
• High School graduate.
• Within six months of employment, acquire and maintain certificates in First Aid and CPR.
• Previous experience working with school-age children.
• Training and/or experience with conflict resolution and physical restraint techniques desired.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Position may require heavy physical labor including ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move heavy objects or materials.
• Great physical demand for strength and endurance.
• Physical functions involve heavy -physical exertion.
• Lifting over 50 lbs. or carrying any object over 25 lbs.
• Position requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend.
