Area West Environmental, Inc. – Senior Biologist, Project Manager
Area West Environmental, Inc. (AWE) is an environmental consulting firm in the Sacramento area seeking to fill a Senior Biologist/Project Manager position, Full-time. This position would report to the Orangevale office but work may be located anywhere in California. Our existing projects include work in northern and central California. We are looking to expand into Southern California. The applicant must have a minimum of 3 years of experience preparing environmental compliance, and permitting documentation, managing staff, managing projects, coordinating with clients and potential clients. The applicant must be available to travel and stay out of town overnight or for up to a week at a time, depending on the job.
Education Requirements:
- Must have a Bachelor's (Master's or Ph.D. preferred) degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
Experience Requirements:
- At least 5 years of relevant professional environmental experience in California.
- At least 3 years of professional experience managing projects.
- Knowledge and understanding of state and federal laws and regulations, including but not limited to: California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Clean Water Act, Federal Endangered Species Act, California Endangered Species Act, and California Fish and Game Code.
Skill Requirements:
- Positive, flexible, team-oriented approach, with the willingness and desire to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Good organizational skills, ability to work on multiple tasks; flexibility/adaptability is a must.
- Strong time management skills – needs to possess the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; simultaneously work on and manage multiple tasks/projects.
- Self-starter.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, detail oriented, and resourceful.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Solid technical writing ability.
- Ability to work hours other than 9-5, if needed (e.g., early mornings, late nights, weekends).
- Self-motivated with a work ethic that incorporates honesty, punctuality, and initiative.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills – must work well with all tiers of managers, technical and administrative staff.
- Must have a valid California Driver's license, good driving record, proof of insurance, and be authorized to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Managing projects, tasks, budgets, and deadlines.
- Communicating with project staff, clients, and regulatory agency staff.
- Collaboratively work with and mentor junior staff.
- Preparing proposals, scopes of work, and cost estimates.
- Compiling and coordinating completion of project proposals, reports, and permit applications.
- Conducting background research and database searches for biological studies.
- Identifying avoidance measures, conducting impact assessments, and mitigation planning.
- Managing scope, budget, and schedule for a range of project types.
- Coordinating and managing work of technical specialists.
- Effectively guiding projects to completion.
- Developing new and existing client relationships.
- Writing CEQA report sections, permit applications, and monitoring reports.
- Overseeing in-field biological monitors for construction projects.
- Preparing reports from project staff field notes.
- Integrating multiple report sections from various staff members into cohesive documents.
- Participating in business development and preparing proposals.
- Complying with all company policies and guidelines.
